Immerse yourself in the world of Sumo with this unique tour! You'll start your journey at Ryogoku Station, where your guide will lead you on a fascinating walk through the Ryogoku district. You'll visit the Eko-in Temple, a historic Buddhist temple with a special connection to Sumo wrestling.
Discover the deep spiritual connection between sumo and Ekoin Temple. For over a century, these sacred grounds hosted Tokyo's main sumo tournaments, a history honored at the "Chikara-zuka" (Mound of Strength). This special monument is still a revered spot where aspiring wrestlers come to pray for power and success. Founded in 1657, the temple offers a tranquil space that embodies the enduring soul of Japan's national sport in the heart of Ryogoku.
Next, we’ll step into the lively Edo-Noren, a stunning dining and cultural hall located within Ryogoku Station. At its heart sits a magnificent, full-scale dohyo, identical to those used in tournaments. This is a fantastic opportunity to get closer than most ever will to the sacred ring and see how it is meticulously constructed from special clay and sand. It provides a rare, up-close appreciation for the hallowed ground where every dramatic sumo bout unfolds.
Then, right before entering the kokugikan, you'll take a peaceful stroll through the Kyu-Yasuda Garden, a beautiful traditional Japanese garden with a pond, teahouse, and lush greenery. Its central pond was ingeniously designed in the Edo period to use the tides of the nearby Sumida River, causing its water levels to rise and fall. As you meander along its stone paths and charming bridges, you'll discover a vision of timeless Japanese beauty, offering a perfect, peaceful respite from the city's energy.
Afterward, you'll head to the Kokugikan Stadium, the home of Sumo wrestling. Your guide will lead you to the compact but informative Sumo Museum, where you can explore the history and traditions of this ancient sport. You'll see exhibits on Sumo techniques, rituals, and famous wrestlers.
Finally, it's time for the main event! Your guide will escort you to your seat in the Kokugikan Stadium, where you'll witness the excitement of a live Sumo Tournament. You'll feel the energy of the crowd as the wrestlers clash in the ring. After the tour concludes, you are welcome to stay and enjoy the matches at your leisure.
Please note that your guide will NOT be providing any commentary during the game.
