Mt Koya Autumn Leaves Mt. Koya reaches the peak of its beauty during the autumn season. The normally tranquil "sanctuary in the sky" undergoes a breathtaking transformation as its historic temples and ancient streets are wrapped in a vibrant canvas of crimson and gold leaves.
The best time to witness this stunning autumn foliage is typically from late October to mid-November. Come and experience a truly special autumn getaway—stroll through the mountain trails painted in rich seasonal colors and savor the exquisite flavors of traditional vegetarian Shojin-ryori.
History of Mt Koya Mt. Koya serves as the sacred center of Shingon Buddhism, an influential sect introduced to Japan in 805 by Kobo Daishi (also known as Kukai)—one of the nation's most revered religious figures. Over the centuries, a peaceful, secluded temple town has flourished around the mountain's densely forested peak, where Kobo Daishi originally established his headquarters. Today, this holy mountain houses his sacred mausoleum and serves as both the spiritual starting and concluding point of the famous Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage.
After years of wandering the country in search of the perfect spiritual cradle for his teachings, Kobo Daishi began construction on the original Garan temple complex in 826. Since its founding, more than one hundred temples have risen along the misty streets of Mt. Koya. Among these, the two most significant sites are Kongobuji, the head temple of Shingon Buddhism, and Okunoin, the deeply mystical area surrounding Kobo Daishi’s mausoleum.
