Takayama Festival The Spring Takayama Festival heralds the arrival of spring in the Hida mountains, filling the town with a bright, celebratory atmosphere. The "Gojunko" procession, featuring hundreds of people clad in traditional Edo-period costumes, unfolds like a living historical scroll painting. The highlight of the festival is the procession of the yatai (festival floats), which are true masterpieces of traditional craftsmanship. These floats were designated as Important Tangible Folk Cultural Properties in 1960, and the festival itself was registered on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016. The beauty of Takayama Festival is recognized as a global treasure.
The highlight of the festival is the parade of "Yatai" (festival floats), which are masterpieces of craftsmanship.
In 1960, the floats themselves were designated as National Important Tangible Folk Cultural Properties. Later, in 2016, they were inscribed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, gaining global recognition as a world treasure.
