Gion Matsuri Festival This festival is one of the 3 major festivals in Japn along with Kanda Matsuri festvial in Tokyo and Tenjin Matsuri festival in Osaka. Gion Matsuri has started more than 1,000 years ago to ward off devastating plagues and epidemics and it is recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Festival runs throughout July, but most popluar days are 17th and 24th is the highlight where you can enjoy wathching the float procession. Some of the floats 25m/82feet tall! It is the most exciting part of the Gion Matsuri festival.
From the Reserved Viewing Seats, you can see all the bright colors and feel the lively atmosphere of the festival.

Important Notice: Road crossings will be prohibited shortly before the arrival of the Yamahoko floats. Please ensure you are in your seat at least 30 minutes before the scheduled passing time of the lead float.

- Please pick up your ticket by 7:00 p.m. the night before.
- Wheelchair seatings are not available.
- Viewing and Safety Guidelines Prohibition of Parasols and Umbrellas: The use of umbrellas (both for sun and rain) may be prohibited in crowded areas or paid viewing sections, as they obstruct the view of others. Please ensure you prepare a hat or raincoat.
Restrictions on Tripods and Stepladders: For safety reasons, the use of tripods, monopods, and stepladders on sidewalks and around viewing areas is prohibited or restricted.
Heatstroke Prevention: Kyoto becomes extremely hot in mid-July. Please take thorough measures against sun exposure and ensure you frequently replenish fluids and salt.
- Traffic Restrictions and Travel Advice Major Traffic Restrictions: On the 17th, vehicle traffic will be prohibited around the parade route (e.g., Shijo-dori, Kawaramachi-dori, Oike-dori) from approximately 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Additionally, from the evening (approx. 5:50 PM on the 17th to 12:30 AM on the 18th), traffic restrictions will be in effect on Shijo-dori and other areas due to the Shinko-sai procession.
Avoid Traveling by Car: Severe traffic congestion is expected on roads throughout Kyoto City on the day. The use of public transportation (trains and subways) is highly recommended.
- Photography and Etiquette The use of drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) is prohibited for safety reasons. Trespassing into restricted areas or onto private property, as well as littering (please take your trash with you), is strictly prohibited. Please be sure to follow the instructions of local staff and security personnel.
