Exclusive from October 1 to 6! Experience Kyoto’s Premier Autumn Tradition Held every October for just six days, Onshukai is one of Kyoto’s most exclusive autumn traditions. The word "Onshū" means study and repeated practice. While the famous spring Miyako Odori is a grand, celebratory show, Onshukai offers a refined, high-art performance where the Geiko and Maiko of Gion Kobu showcase the culmination of their year-round mastery in traditional dance, song, and musical accompaniment.
Onshukai is a prestigious performance of classical Japanese dance (Nihon Buyo) and live traditional music.
First held in 1895, this authentic autumn event is where the Geiko and Maiko of Gion Kobu—Kyoto’s most famous geisha district—present the fruits of their daily artistic training.
Held every October for just six days, it offers a refined contrast to the grand spring festival Miyako Odori. The focus is purely on high-art Kyomai (Kyoto-style dance) accompanied by live shamisen (traditional lute) and vocalists.
The repertoire and performers change with the day, highlighting the subtle, controlled movements of the renowned Inoue-ryu dance school.
Each performer showcases a full year’s worth of intense preparation and devotion, bringing classic folklore and seasonal beauty to life.
On each day, the stage closes with a breathtaking performance that leaves a lasting impression of the timeless grace and quiet luxury of Gion Kobu.
Performance Duration The performance lasts approximately 2 hours.
