The Highlight

  • The museum displays the actual "Icarus No.5," Japan’s first successful manned hot air balloon, alongside other historical artifacts and informative exhibits about ballooning.

  • The museum offers balloon-themed souvenirs and local Saga food products, and a café serving light meals such as curry and pasta made with Saga-grown ingredients.

  • It is situated about a 17-minute walk from JR Saga Station or a short bus/taxi ride, with parking available for visitors

The Experience

The Saga Balloon Museum, opened in 2016 in Matsubara, Saga City, is Japan’s first permanent museum dedicated to hot air balloons and the culture surrounding them. It serves as both an educational and experiential facility where visitors can learn about the history, technology, and international ballooning events, especially the renowned Saga International Balloon Fiesta, one of Asia's largest balloon festivals.

Opening Hours: Generally 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (last admission at 4:30 PM), with extended hours during the Balloon Fiesta and some local festivals.
