Enjoy the beauty of Japan’s rainy season with a scenic ride on the Hakone Hydrangea Train, seasonal flowers, and a luxurious hotel lunch buffet.
Experience the charm of early summer in Hakone, when hydrangeas color the landscape during Japan’s rainy season. One of the highlights is a scenic ride on the Hakone Tozan Railway, affectionately known as the “Hydrangea Train,” where flowers bloom so close to the windows you can almost touch them. The best viewing period gradually shifts along the route from mid-June to mid-July due to changes in elevation.
At Odawara Castle Park, selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Historical Parks, you can admire a beautiful combination of approximately 2,500 hydrangea bushes and 10,000 iris plants from late May to late June. The park’s scenery, featuring the castle tower and moats, creates a picturesque seasonal landscape.
You will also visit Hakone Shrine, a historic and highly revered spiritual site nestled among lush forest near Lake Ashi. It is known for blessings related to good fortune, traffic safety, and wish fulfillment.
For lunch, enjoy a highly popular buffet at Hakone Hotel Kowakien. The menu includes a variety of dishes such as roast beef sandwiches prepared by chefs, fresh oven-baked pizza using local ingredients, seafood rice bowls, and the hotel’s traditional ramen. Free-flow alcoholic and soft drinks are also available.
The tour also includes free time around Hakone-Yumoto Station, where you can stroll through a lively shopping street filled with local specialties such as kamaboko fish cakes, hot spring buns, sweets, and traditional crafts.
