The Highlight

  • An opportunity to enhance self-awareness and reflect on life through the lessons learned from the natural disaster following the 2011 tsunami.
  • Mingle with locals who have risen from the disaster and are striving toward the revitalization of their hometown.

The Experience

Reviving Hamayaki Tradition in Matsukawaura

  • Discover the revived tradition of Hamayaki, a beloved seafood BBQ experience in Matsukawaura, recently brought back to life by the young masters of local ryokans after the devastation of the 2011 tsunami. Before the earthquake, visitors were enticed by the savory aroma of flounder, squid, and corn being grilled over charcoal in front of each inn. Now, you have the chance to partake in this nostalgic activity yourself.

Hands-On Hamayaki Experience:

  • Your experience begins with the creation of a charcoal fire, followed by the challenging but rewarding process of skewering and grilling fresh fish. Guided by the skilled “young masters” of the Matsukawaura Guide Association, you’ll learn the craftsmanship behind this traditional cooking method while hearing firsthand stories of the area's resilience and revival.

A Memorable Dinner with Your Grilled Creations:

  • The fish you grill will be served as part of a memorable dinner when you stay overnight at one of the local ryokans. The Hamayaki you prepare will be a testament to your efforts and a flavorful connection to the rich history of Matsukawaura.
