The Experience

About the Architecture:

  • The entrance hall, special exhibition hall, and administration building stand parallel to the coastline.
  • These three structures are unified by a 190-meter-long, 8.5-meter-high "mirror glass screen" that seamlessly connects all exterior walls, including the connecting corridors. On the seaside, a reflecting pool complements the architecture, with eight movable exhibition rooms covered in vibrant colored glass positioned above it.

Award Announcement:

  • Shimose Art Museum, nominated as one of the seven "Most Beautiful Museums in the World" for the Versailles Award, received the top honor at the award ceremony held at UNESCO headquarters on December 2, 2024.

About Iwakuni Shirohebi Shrine:

  • Since ancient times, the Japanese have revered white animals as sacred embodiments of the gods. Iwakuni’s white snakes have a history spanning over 300 years. It is believed that these snakes protected the rice granaries of the Kikkawa family, the lords of the Iwakuni domain, from rat infestations. Over time, they became associated with Benzaiten, the Hindu goddess of water, leading to the construction of numerous shrines and halls dedicated to the white snake across Iwakuni.
  • Today, the shrine is known for bringing blessings of wealth, good fortune, business prosperity, and traffic safety, attracting many visitors. The shrine grounds also feature various snake-themed designs and motifs.
