Create your own traditional Kumiko woodcraft in Noshiro, the historic “City of Wood,” and experience the precision of Japanese craftsmanship firsthand.
Enjoy a hands-on Kumiko crafting experience in Noshiro City, Akita Prefecture, a port town at the mouth of the Yoneshiro River that once thrived as a major hub for Akita cedar. Thanks to its flourishing timber industry, Noshiro was known as the “Wood Capital of the East,” a legacy that continues today with many wood-related businesses still active in the city.
During this workshop, you will carefully assemble wooden Kumiko parts by hand, just as craftsmen do. The process involves detailed work, but the satisfying click as each piece fits into place is truly rewarding. The final finishing with sandpaper lets you enjoy the gentle, natural aroma of wood. (Material used: Hiba wood)
You can choose to make either a strap (approx. 5.6 cm diameter) or a coaster (approx. 10 cm diameter, +500 yen option). Completed pieces can be taken home the same day. Select your preferred cord length and use your Kumiko as a bag charm, necklace, or decorative accessory.
The experience also includes a bottle of mineral water sourced from the World Natural Heritage site Shirakami-Sanchi and a local Noshiro confection as a souvenir. The workshop is held at a nearby city facility or the tourist information office, both within a short walking distance.
Perfect as a personal keepsake or a unique handmade gift, this Kumiko experience offers a meaningful way to connect with Noshiro’s rich woodworking heritage.
