Enjoy Maiko and Geisha dance performance in Kyoto!
The Kamogawa Odori, a spring dance performed by the Pontocho Kabukai, one of Kyoto's five geisha districts (Hanamachi), was first staged in 1872 (Meiji 5). Although it was interrupted for a period during the Meiji era and again during World War II, it was quickly resumed after the war and continues to this day. From 1951 to 1998, performances were held twice a year, in spring and autumn, totaling 184 performances (as of 2023), the highest number among Kyoto's five Hanamachi. Even now, returning to a single annual spring performance, it delights audiences with a two-part program: a dance drama (Part I) and pure Japanese dance (Part II) featuring glamorous geiko and maiko. Its appeal has gained an international reputation, enchanting prominent overseas figures such as Jean Cocteau and Charlie Chaplin. In the early Showa period, the Kamogawa Odori incorporated Western music and staged "shojo reviews" (girl revues), showing that it has consistently sought innovation and development while also preserving tradition. The Kamogawa Odori was also first performed in 1872 (Meiji 5), and this elegant tea ceremony, which deepens the Odori (dance) atmosphere, is highly praised along with the purely Kyoto-style appearance of the geiko and maiko performing the otemae.
During the Kamogawa Odori performance period, a tea ceremony is held on the fourth floor of the venue. Before the start of the performance, you can enjoy the otemae (tea preparation ceremony) performed by geiko (geisha) at the tea ceremony. After enjoying the tea and sweets, the sweet dish can be taken home as a souvenir.
Schedule: 75 minutes performance will be held daily at 12:30/14:20/16:10.
