Seven Hells of Beppu The Seven Hells of Beppu, or Jigoku Meguri, are a series of unique geothermal hot spring attractions in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, Japan. Unlike typical onsen, these hot springs are too hot for bathing and are instead admired for their striking appearances and cultural significance. ① Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) Features a cobalt blue pond resembling the sea, with water temperatures reaching 98°C. Highlights include tropical plants, a Japanese garden, and giant Amazonian water lilies blooming from May to November.
② Oniishibozu Jigoku (Shaven Monk’s Head Hell) Known for bubbling gray mud pools resembling monks' shaved heads. Offers a circular foot bath fed by clear hot spring water.
③ Shiraike Jigoku (White Pond Hell) A milky white-green pond surrounded by serene gardens. Includes a tropical fish aquarium heated by the hot springs.
