The Miyauchi district in Nanyo City has long flourished as a "monzen-machi"—a town built around the gates of a major shrine. In Japan, many communities developed this way, and Miyauchi is a prime example.
As pilgrims flocked to Kumano Taisha Shrine, shops emerged along the paths, eventually evolving into a vibrant town. On this walking tour, you will explore the origins of this shrine-centered community and experience the local lifestyle that continues to thrive today.
Participants must be 20 years of age or older to join this tour, as it includes a visit to a sake brewery.
