Discover Wakayama’s icons in one day! Visit coastal Shirahama, sacred Kumano shrines, Seiganto-ji, and Nachi Falls. Departures available from Osaka or Shirahama. This tour is conducted by an English-speaking guide only.
Senjojiki A magnificent landscape of vast, white rock plateaus stretching out against the deep blue backdrop of the Pacific Ocean. Over centuries, the pounding rough waves have eroded the stone, shaping it into a natural, mat-like rock formation.
Toretore Market One of the largest seafood markets in Western Japan. Offering a wide selection of fresh catches from around the country and local Wakayama specialties at reasonable prices. At the "Toretore Yokocho" food court, visitors can savor delicious seafood bowls and fresh local marine delicacies.
Kumano Hongu Taisha Registered as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range." Stepping onto the shrine grounds, you will feel the breath of nature and the profound weight of history alongside the serene flow of time. The Treasure Hall houses valuable historical artifacts, including a national Important Cultural Property, the "Tetsu-yugama" (iron cauldron). The Zuihoden hall, designed with the motif of the sacred three-legged crow Yatagarasu, features a tea salon, café, and souvenir shop—making it a perfect spot to relax after your prayer.
Kumano Nachi Taisha & Seiganto-ji Temple Kumano Nachi Taisha, one of the Kumano Sanzan grand shrines, sits halfway up Mount Nachi and originated from ancient nature worship dedicated to Nachi Falls. At the top of 467 stone steps stands a vibrant, vermilion-lacquered worship hall, behind which six sacred main hall buildings reside in a solemn atmosphere. Within the grounds stands a sacred 850-year-old giant camphor tree, where visitors can experience Tainai Kuguri (walking through the hollow trunk), a ritual symbolizing spiritual rebirth. Located right next to the shrine is Nachisan Seiganto-ji Temple. The three-story vermilion pagoda standing behind the main hall creates an iconic, breathtaking view with Nachi Falls cascading in the background.
Nachi Falls Boasting the tallest single uninterrupted drop in the country, Nachi Falls is recognized as one of Japan's top three waterfalls. Upstream from Nachi Falls lie numerous waterfalls known as the "Nachi 48 Falls," which served as training grounds for Shugendo ascetics, with Nachi Falls itself being revered as the "First Waterfall" (Ichi-no-Taki). Watching the water plummet 133 meters down the sheer, vertical rock face is a truly breathtaking sight.
