A 300-year tradition – the enchanting dance of the town of wind, Owara Kaze no Bon Held annually from September 1st to 3rd, the Owara Kaze no Bon Festival is an event that heralds the arrival of autumn in Yatsuo, a district of Toyama City. Men and women wearing woven hats pulled low over their faces gracefully parade through the town to the melancholic melodies of kokyū, shamisen, and the traditional Etchū Owara folk songs. This dance has been passed down for over 300 years since the Edo period. Eleven local neighborhoods—collectively known as “Kyūchō” (Old Town)—each perform their own street processions. The elegant movements through this historic, slope-lined town evoke a deep sense of lyricism and refinement.
The entire town is embraced by the spirit of Owara – the nostalgic charm of Yatsuo During the Owara Kaze no Bon Festival, 11 neighborhood groups perform evening street dances from around 5:00 PM, each with unique dance styles, yukata designs, and song lyrics. Highlights include the lively Fukushima area near Etchū-Yatsuo Station with a stage and food stalls, charming saotome dances by young girls in Higashi-Shinmachi, and performances in scenic areas like Suwamachi, known as one of Japan’s most beautiful streets.
The deeply worn woven hats create a mysterious and graceful allure As lanterns softly light the streets, dancers with woven hats flow gracefully through the town in the enchanting Owara Kaze no Bon. Three dance styles are performed: the elegant Women’s Dance in matching yukata, the powerful Men’s Dance in happi coats, and the traditional Harvest Dance. Each brings its own charm to this atmospheric festival.
