Customized experience museum for the entire town Zentsuji City in Kagawa Prefecture is the birthplace of Kobo Daishi Kukai, a great figure in Japanese Buddhism known to all Japanese people. Born 1,250 years ago, Kukai achieved enlightenment by training in the magnificent natural surroundings of his hometown of Shikoku. Even now, more than 1,200 years after his time, many worshipers who admire Kukai come from all over the world to follow the pilgrimage path he left behind. At five temples related to Kukai in Zentsuji City, you can experience content that allows you to face yourself and hone your five senses, with the themes of Mandara Temple - tactile sense, Shusshaka Temple - visual sense, Koyama Temple - auditory sense, Zentsuji Temple - taste, and Konzo Temple - olfactory sense.
Sit with your posture straight on the tatami mat, calmly imagine the full moon in your mind as you breathe. By gradually increasing the size of the full moon, which is small enough to fit in your chest, and expanding into the world and the universe, you will approach a spacious and calm heart like that of the Buddha. By listening to the sound of the wind, the voices of insects, and the guiding voice of the chief priest, you can also listen to your own inner voice, and experience a refreshing feeling of being freed from daily distractions.
The fusuma calligraphy you can also see was created by calligrapher Kohei Okamoto, who is also a Kukai scholar. On the 36 sliding doors that separate the five rooms, the Heart Sutra, a Buddhist text, is written in a font called Hihakutai, which is said to have been brought back from the Tang Dynasty by Kukai. Rain, mountains, dragons, etc. are expressed through the flowing lines of letters, making this work both calligraphy and beautiful, like a painting.
